The Great Apocalypse was a cataclysmic event that brought the about the end of civilization on the Old World. The exact nature of this event remains largely a mystery, considering so much time has passed, even written records from the Old World are nearly impossible to decipher or make sense of. No illustrations depicting the events of the Great Apocalypse are known to exist, and how or why it happened remains a mystery. Some blame the machinery and technology of the Old World for its downfall, believing Old World technology to be dangerous and sometimes even unholy. Others blame it on a possible great war of immense proportions, which depleted the resources of every nation on the planet. Others think it could have been a plague that swept across the world, killing nearly every human in its grasp. The vague nature of these theories is overshadowed only by the mystery of the event itself.

According to X, a leading archeologist in the study of the Old World, the Great Apocalypse took place roughly around the -81st Century, or possibly earlier. The people of the Old World were an advanced civilization that appears to have developed far faster than the current peoples of Niove. The people of the Old World were capable of using technology or possibly magic to create floating towers within the sky, some of which are still observable using a telescope. In addition, they had advanced weaponry and machinery, which appeared to be capable of performing tasks far faster than anything known to Niove. Suddenly, records become sparse past the -81st century, and no evidence younger than -8000 is known to exist. However, it is unknown what caused the Great Apocalypse. Old World ruins stop appearing, and many human remains found after the -81st century show evidence of trauma, as well as possible malnutrition.
